On Friday I woke up in a pretty bad mood. Nothing had really happened to provoke it, but I had no plans for the next couple of days and had for some reason almost resigned myself to spending them largely alone in my room. However, thinking of Amy’s advice to just ‘force myself on people’ (apparently this was her tactic when making friends with me..!), I texted Nathalie and wrote on the wall of the Graz language assistants facebook group in the vague hope that something would come up. And somehow I ended up having one of my busiest days since getting here, doing 4 different things and meeting several new people. So thanks, Amy!
Since I neglected this blog for so long, I think I have probably failed to mention some fairly basic things about my life here in Austria. Therefore, here is a quick update for anyone not in the know. For anything more detailed, refer to my other two posts!
As promised, for once, here is a very prompt update on my weekend!
Having discovered at the beginning of last week that this Monday (ie today) is some kind of school holiday in Styria, I decided to be fairly spontaneous and make the most of my four day weekend by taking a trip. Jono (who I study with in Sheffield) very kindly offered his services both as a tour guide and hotel, and after a slightly longer lie-in than necessary on Friday, I set off for Vienna early in the afternoon. I maintain that it would be possible to get there in half the time if the trains travelled at a reasonable speed, but since they don’t, the journey took a leisurely two and a half hours. Luckily a large proportion of this was through the mountains and I was at least treated to some beautiful views.
At least I’m fairly sure I have…
Fingers crossed it actually goes ahead. 1 lesson a week for 10 weeks starting mid-April which will hopefully help me on the way to getting back to my end-of-SPb standard.
Maybe this will be a good enough reason to do some kind of real blog soon. MAYBE.
